Overview

The determination of the rightful heirs to an estate can be challenging. However DNA testing may be utilized in a number of ways to provide scientific evidence of a biological relationship. This can be accomplished as follows:

  • Direct Testing of Known Sample from the Deceased - It is possible to use a pathology or autopsy sample from the deceased. Alternatively, it may be possible for the funeral home to provide assistance in collecting a sample from the deceased, prior to the cremation or burial of the individual
  • Indirect Testing of Known Biological Relatives of the Deceased - If an estate claim comes up after the deceased has been buried or cremated, it is possible to take samples from individuals who are known to be related to the deceased.

It is also possible, if one anticipates a claim on their estate, to order Orchid Cellmark's Heritage ID DNA Profiling and Preservation service resulting in a Heritage ID card that can be attached to a person's will. A Heritage ID card includes a DNA profile and DNA sample. The DNA profile and/or DNA sample can be used on a post-mortem basis should the issue of inheritance come up.

Orchid Cellmark recognizes that the importance of obtaining and storing a good quality DNA profile and sample for potential future use in resolving an estate matter and recognizes the importance of a variety of DNA technologies to resolve often complicated kinship scenarios that occur in estate cases. To that end, we provide an accurate, confidential and timely service.
