Short Tandem Repeat (STR) Analysis involves the examination of short repeating sequences of DNA present in different individuals a different number of times. Orchid Cellmark typically tests anywhere from 13 up to 16 different STR markers including those tested by the three public laboratories in Canada. Orchid Cellmark offers STR analysis using a variety of commercially available kits, all of which are licensed and validated.
These kits include:
- Identifiler
- Profiler Plus
- Profiler Plus/Cofiler
- Powerplex 16

In a typical case, Orchid Cellmark will work with the evidentiary sample first, in order to be certain that we have successfully obtained a DNA profile before going on to test the reference sample from either or both of the suspect and victim.
The first step in a DNA test, after extracting the DNA from the evidence, is to quantify the amount of DNA that is present and to determine the amount of DNA, the condition and the likely proportions of male and female DNA. This enables us to recommend the appropriate DNA technology to use for the sample.
Once we have chosen the best DNA technology and obtained a profile from the evidentiary sample, we will test the reference sample(s) using the same technology. After the analysis, Orchid Cellmark will generate a written report. A typical turnaround time is anywhere from 2-4 weeks.
