Non-Standard Samples

There are certain cases where it is not possible to collect a cheek swab from the party to be tested. However since the DNA is the same in virtually every cell in the body, it is possible to obtain DNA from other sample types. In our laboratory, we refer to any non-cheek swab or non-blood sample as a non-standard sample.

Non-standard samples are treated by our laboratory “forensically” in that they require individual treatment and specialized laboratory procedures in order to maximize the probability of successfully extracting the DNA. While our laboratory makes every effort to obtain DNA from non-standard samples, we cannot guarantee that we will be successful in every case. Please note that due to the fact that there is extra work involved in processing a non-standard sample, there is a surcharge which will apply to the testing of such samples. Please see the Non-Standard Sample Fee Schedule.

Also depending on the circumstances under which the sample was collected, stored and shipped, a non-standard sample may or may not qualify as a proper “Chain of Custody” sample.

Below are some examples of samples which may yield a usable DNA sample:

Samples which may contain saliva or buccals cells:

  • Discarded chewing gum
  • Discarded cigarette butts
  • Tobacco pipes
  • Used drinking containers (cups, bottles, straws)
  • Musical instrument mouth pieces (saxophones, trumpets)
  • Mouth guards, dentures
  • Eating utensils (fork, spoon)

Personal items which may contain skin cells:

  • Watches/Rings
  • Clothing items such as underwear
  • Bicycle helmets/sports bands

Biological specimens which may be collected:

  • Pulled hairs with roots attached (8-10)
  • Used facial tissues
  • Used sanitary napkins
  • Fingernail or toenail clippings
  • Whole teeth (preferred if without cavities)

Biological samples provided by a coroner/doctor/clinic:

  • Tissue slides (PAP smears or paraffin embedded tissues)
  • Muscle or organ tissues
  • Bone tissue

Any non-standard samples which are submitted for analysis must be accompanied by the Non-Standard Chain of Custody form.
